In Their Shoes; Benjamin Deberdt

As you will have seen over the years, although not a skater myself, it's an area I love shooting, due to the colour, energy and style of the skate world.

The skate world is something I will be exploring in more detail in the coming months. but it seems quite apt right now to showcase on an established name in the game.
Thanks to adidas, this latest instalment of 'In Their Shoes' is an exclusive interview with Benjamin Deberdt, an iconic publisher/photographer who is linked to the upcoming '15 years of Gonz a Adidas campaign celebrating the latest Mark Gonzalez adidas Skateboard shoe (more on that in the near future!).
Benjamin and Mark's paths have been crossing for years. However, the most recent collaboration has been one of Gonz’s ‘norm defying’ dreams— The Circle Board. Made from nine skateboards attached nose to tail, the circle board was brought to Paris in 2010.
Mark says; “Benjamin is really fun to shoot photos with. The reason that it is so fun is because, no matter how ridiculous the thing is that you want to do, he's willing to photograph it. The circle board at the Trocadaro in Paris is a perfect example.”

Well that's Mark's words - a big thanks to adidas for this exclusive, here are some words from Benjamin himself...

Can you recall the first time that you heard about Mark?

BD - A long time ago, when I was first interested in skateboarding, I remember he had some short interview in a French BMX and skateboard mag. He had come to Paris for this vert contest or demo, in this huge arena. Even if the 80’s were almost over, the mood was still there!

When was the first time that you met Mark and why?
BD
- I try to remember a definitive moment, but I can’t be 100% positive. It must have been when I was crashing at Aaron Rose’s apartment, downtown NYC. Alleged Gallery was closed, but they had planned an exhibition in Aaron’s place, so Mark would show up with these newspapers and Calvin Klein posters and create collages out of them all day. He was super cool. I was so intimidated I only shot a couple photos at the opening night, but never during the making of all this art. I was so shy, and he had such a strong presence.

What is your funniest moment with Mark?
BD
- I remember once pushing with Mark toward Street Machine skate shop, just getting from point A to point B in Paris. I did a simple no-comply, or something basic, to which he replied: “Oh, you want to do tricks!?” and he started pointing at various obstacles on our path, and stating what trick he was going to do. That was pretty funny!

Has Mark had any kind on influence on how you work, skate or live?
BD
- I was actually thinking about it the other night. I believe the main influence he’s had on me is how he has always just been himself all along. Skateboarders love to think of themselves as free spirits and open-minded, but we have had so so many rules over the years! Mark would always show up and do something completely out of those boundaries, not even trying to be different, but just because he felt like it. Whenever someone tries to lecture me or anyone around me about music, clothing, skateboard tricks or anything, I can only think about Mark and laugh! “Man, you have completely missed the point, haven’t you!?”

What is your favourite photo of Mark that you have taken and why?
BD
- I would say the Circle Board colour one with the sun rise shining on his face. It’s a bit of a “perfect moment”, and it was not at all staged. We were done shooting the performance he wanted to document, and started to skating back home. He was just cruising along on the Circle Board (that thing is just not skatable!), anyway, I kind of “saw” that photo coming, changed to a colour film, and caught up with him to snap one or two frames. That was it. So, yes, this one makes me grin!

Where in the world have you been with Mark? Which was your favourite trip and why?
BD
- We have never really been on trips or even spent long periods of time together. It was always a day, a couple hours, here and there, really. Around Paris and New York, mainly, then a few days around Lyon and Marseille, when he lived in France a long time ago. But, you don’t need to travel long distance to enter another world with Mark! Give him ten minutes, and you’ll be inside the cigar boutique you never knew existed in your neighbourhood...

How does it feel to be involved in this event celebrating such an iconic skateboarder?
BD
- I’m sure everybody involved is really proud to be associated with such a great initiative! Mark has been such an influence to all of us in so many ways, plus all the photographers involved are amazing at what they do. To be frank, I feel a bit out of my league, here, but I’ll take it!

Your relationship with Gonz goes back years and you have worked together on numerous occasions.

The most recent project was the Circle Board. How did the collaboration come about?
BD
- That was the beauty of it: it happened very quickly and naturally, even if the book only happened two years after. Mark wanted to film this Circle Board session in front of the Eiffel Tower for an exhibition at Franklin Parrasch gallery in NYC. He called me to film it. I declined, as that’s not what I do, but organized for someone to do it. I tagged along to shoot photos, off course. The whole thing lasted less than an hour, exactly how Mark likes it: quick and spontaneous!

Then a year or so after, Joseph Allen Shea saw the whole bulk of photos from that morning and got excited about publishing it as a book. So excited that we contacted Mark to draw over the photos. We were lucky as he had time, and more importantly, was excited about the idea. This time again, it went down really quick, and Mark’s work was amazing. I feel so blessed that we did this book.

If this has wet your appetite for some Gonz action, then adidas are taking the retrospective exhibition ’15 years of Gonz’ around the world, with a Sydney event taking place 2 – 4 August 2013. To mark the anniversary, adidas has brought together six photographers who have been part of the Gonz journey including Gabe Morford, Joe Brook, Skin Phillips, Brian Gaberman, Benjamin Deberdt and Sem Rubio. The photographers tell Mark’s story through their lenses along with Eric Noren, Dan Wolfe, and Torsten Frank, who share their Gonz moments in the Retrospective film: ’15 Years of Gonz and adidas’ - hope to see you there!

Martyn; Sydney

Spotted with his mate's in Sydney's Hyde Park, Martyn is another example of the resurgence that Converse seem to be having at present.
His own move to the brand only came about recently after he became disillusioned by the overkill of Vans everywhere, which I think it's fair to say we've all seen around the world in the last couple of years.
He feels that Cons offer classic old school style that works with anything, and even though his brother works at Foot Locker which opens up a lot of choice for him for more complex, contemporary shoes the All Stars have notched another fan from their clean, timeless style.

Birthday Girl

Putting up with my incessant search into the sneaker world cannot be easy, so today as it's her birthday it's time to say a big THANKS to the Missus.  She was the inspiration behind this whole journey, and while it's got a lot bigger than maybe either of us could have imagined she supports my every step - so a huge thanks darling!
She was happy to pose in the newest shoes in her own collection, these Puma by Mihara Yasuhiro MY-61s from the 2012 Snake Pack.
Yasuhiro's innovative spins on footwear continue to make his work some of the most eye-catching in the Puma Black Label, a Premium Collection you don't see enough of in Australia so she's a lucky lady, but nowhere near as lucky as I am!
Happy Birthday Mrs x

Connor; Sydney

Birthday boy Connor was just off to spend some birthday money when we met, and his purchase of choice was ... you guessed it ... some new shoes.
He's been rocking these kicks from the brand Macbeth for some time, and loves the fact they are a brand that are not seen too often which he thinks adds to their cool factor.  In terms of style and build he has pushed these Macbeth's pretty hard as his everyday shoe and has been amazed at how comfortable they have been throughout.
His immient new shoe addition though would see him challenge this comfort as he was about to add some Dr Martens to his collection, a robust shoe that many wearers say push you through the pain barrier as you break them in - he's committed to the cause and ready to take the plunge knowing that his loyal Macbeth's are there on standby if the pain ever gets too much.

Paolo; Sydney

It seems only fitting to give Converse some more love this week after featuring the Deus ex Machina collab from earlier this week and in Paolo I have found a huge fan of the brand.
His love for the classic Chuck Taylor All Star leads him to believe that it is 'the world's most iconic shoe'.  Not only do they go with everything he wears but they also cope with anything he throws their way including basketball, skating and more.
He has 3 pairs in his collection and when one pair dies another is swiftly brought in to take their place, so in terms of brand loyalty Paolo is without doubt an All Star All Star fan.

Watch This Space

OK, so no post of the usual kind today, just a nice teaser to do as the image says as I've been tied up working on some pretty cool stuff over the past few months that I will be sharing with you soon.
Plans are underway to revamp IDYSM before the end of the year, but before then I'll be sharing some other exciting work I've been involved with.
Anyway, excuse the slow day...just trust me when I say it's been crazy!

Jack; Sydney

The best thing about I Dig Your Sole Man (in addition to the travel and great swag) is meeting nice people.  Whether that's through brands, companies or people on the street, it is the best thing about all this work, and in Jack I met a sneaker lover who is underway in building his second collection.
Originally from Hong Kong he amased a classy sounding collection in his homeland, including some classy wares from the likes of Visvim, New Balance 580's (from the Malaysian boutique Crossover) and select Dunk SB's.
He had to leave it all behind though when he moved to Sydney, so has started again from scratch but is finding it tricky to find interesting kicks and clothing in a country he finds more mainstream than his homeland.
From his chosen denim of Levis vintage to interesting kicks, finding what he likes hasn't been easy, but he's enjoying the challenge, and picked up these Nike Free Chukka Woven at Hype DC and is happy to have found a low profile shoe with an aesthetic edge that he feels lifts it above other kicks out there.
If you like these shoes and are happy to use Jack's hard work in tracking them down then I'm happy to give Hype DC some love so check it here.

Deus x Converse Collab Party; Sydney

\

Representing a culture of creativity has made Deus ex Machina (God from the Machine) a brand that transcends many areas.  Whether it's to do with customised, hand-made motorcycles, industrial art or fashion their mantra is to look at simplistic authenticity, and their outlook has seen the Sydney based company become a global name in a short space of time.
Their latest endeavour is a collab with Converse offering 2 Deus ex Machina spins on the classic Jack Purcell in their latest First String release.
Last week saw the shoes' launch to a Sydney crowd at the Deus HQ and I was on hand to take a few pics of the shoe and the cool crowd.  Ben (2nd pic) is the brand's General Manager and was keen to show off the slick black Johnny Hi, using premium suedes and canvas and an accented tongue.
The burgundy Johnny Ox is the lo shoe in the pair, which also generated more than a few admirers in a pair that will have the sneakerheads revving up to get in on the action as they won't be around for long!

Izeza; Sydney

It may be hard to believe but most people when complimented on how they look are happy to stop, chat and pose.  In fact in nearly 4 years I would say I could count on both hands the people that have said no, which is pretty cool.
However, the 2 biggest hurdles to face can be the language barrier if the subject doesn't speak English (although my internationally recognisable array of hand gestures is now unparalleled), and whether the subject is in a rush to get somewhere.
In this instance I had both hurdles to deal with as Izeza is from Russia, doesn't speak English as her first language and was in a crazy rush to get to work.  Despite all this she was however kind enough to stop for 2 minutes to show off her Vans Era Leopards.  She picked up the shoes in Sydney and in her mind they reflect the style here as she finds it very different to that back home.
It's always nice to see people absorbing the conditions of their new home, whether thats experimenting with new trends or putting up with crazy British guys asking to photograph your feet.

Justin; Sydney

Like Thomas earlier this week, Justin is another newcomer to Australia who is injecting his own sneaker style into the Sydney scene.
That style is all black everything (with only his impressive array of ink breaking up the monochrome), and it's a look he has transferred seamlessly from his home in Toronto, and such is his commitment to 'noir' it effects everything including his shoe choices.
As a skater Justin's footwear choices are much more about practicality then style, as comfort, support and durability are the key factors for him, and these Nike boots are doing an admirable job of coping with anything and everything he throws at them.
Shoes for skating is one thing, but Justin pushes his shoes further than that, as his kicks also need to cope with the after hours activities too - which means flowing beer and dropping kebabs which these shoes have proved to be very adept at surviving.

T for 2; Sydney

Thomas; Sydney

I've travelled a long way on IDYSM, but with this meet I was taken halfway around the world back to where it all begin for me.
Thomas and I bumped into each other in Bondi, Sydney where I now live. but I quickly found out that he's from a neighbouring town to where I grew up in the UK in the county of Hertfordshire.
While I've been in Oz for 5 years now he's only been in the country for 2 weeks and is still reeling from the harsh decision making required when working out what kicks to pack when moving to the other side of the world (I remember that pain well!).
He strategically narrowed his packing down to just 5 pairs, and while many cater for job hunting and conservative needs, these Nike Air Vortex's in Blue Sapphire take the award of being the brightest shoes now available to him.
So, welcome to Oz Thomas and may your time in Sydney be as bright as your shoes.
